| Okay I confess. I like factory made plastic model boats
too. I can recognize a good thing when I see it. For years I never liked
these boats because they seemed over priced and rather conventional and
something about all the little plastic winches and steering wheels
sort-of bothered me because they serve no purpose on the boat other than
making it look like a model of a real boat which is fine but I guess I
think too much about the concept of what a model is. For me, models can
also be models of the models themselves without portraying something
bigger on a different scale. I've heard it said that modernism means the
end of decoration. The little plastic winches are mere decoration to me. But then I tried sailing one that I had put together for the Boston Model Sailing Club. Man these boats are a hell of a lot of fun to sail! there's something about a boat that is really fast and maneuverable on the water that makes you want to play with the thing all the time. So then a few years later (2006) I got one of my own and here she is. Now I don't care at all about the fact that I didn't design it I just put the kit together and did the anti modernism thing with the red shapes on the sails. Fun can change things |
