A Crowninshield schooner

"Sky"

Launched 5/07

The name "Sky" was my idea. When I was a kid I had this book called "Model Sailing Boats" by E.W.Hobbs, originally published in 1929. Recently my dad re-discovered the book as we were cleaning out his house, and he gave it to me. In it is a small re-print of the lines drawing for a schooner referred to as a "Design Typical of American Practice" It turns out that she closely resembles the schooner "fame" by Crowninshield. I liked the idea of actually making a model that I dreamed about as a kid a long time ago.

This model is forty inches on deck, made of carved pine, and with a leftover keel bulb from an old Victor model products Americas Cup Boat, which turned out to be exactly right. I had a long debate in my head about the design of the keel for this model which has a deeper modern keel, and sharpie rudder. In this configuration she goes like a dream when the wind blows, and it's easier to balance the rig ahead of the lateral plane. In the end, the modern keel won because I happened to have the modern bulb, and figuring out the much prettier traditional full keel to the right shape is a real challenge when mixing buckshot with glue. Melting Lead scares me.

I have the plans available which I drew from the small set of lines in the book. Feel free to e-mail to request a copy. Plans include exact shapes of lifts for carving the hull, sail plan, and keel information. Autocad or printed
